Mazza Medallion
Award of Excellence
The Mazza Medallion of Excellence for Artistic Diversity is a biennial award given by the University of Findlay’s Mazza Museum to recognize an outstanding artist of children’s books. The award consists of a medallion to be presented at a Mazza event the following year.
The Mazza Medallion of Excellence is designed to honor a living artist (at the time of nomination) of children’s books who has created a work of outstanding merit. The key criteria for choosing a recipient for this award is the candidate’s sensitivity to the varying requirements of different stories. Therefore, this award is given to an artist of children’s books who has demonstrated his/her willingness to experiment with both styles and media of illustrating.
About the Medallion
The medallion was designed and created by Findlay artist Betty Fulmer. Using handmade paper, she individually crafted twenty medallions. Each work is unique and numbered although sharing the same design concept. The very first piece is on display in the Mazza Museum.
These creations are full of symbolism with references to universal and timeless themes which honor the most inspiring and talented people who have given so much to the world through children’s literature.
