Saturday
SATURDAY. Written and illustrated by Oge Mora. Little, Brown and Company. Ages 4-8. $18.99
Ava and her mother look forward to Saturdays together. This Saturday they have special plans. However, everything goes wrong! Story hour at the library is canceled, their new hairdos are ruined when a passing car splashes them, and the park is too noisy. But the biggest disappointment is when they realize they left their puppet show tickets at home. Using the collage style that won her a Caldecott Honor Award in 2019 for THANK YOU, OMU!, Mora shows a plucky mother and daughter making the most of their disappointments to enjoy life in the big city.
This book just won the 2020 Ohioana Juvenile Award for younger readers. The Ohioana Library Association, located in Columbus, preserves and supports books by Ohioans or about Ohio. Mora grew up in Columbus and earned a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design. Mora says she “is a fan of all things colorful, patterned, or collaged, and enjoys creating warm stories that celebrate people coming together.” This book reflects both of those passions.
