On Dec. 12, 2017 the Laiho Gallery of the Mazza Museum, dedicated to art from paper engineered books, introduced its most recent rotation of eye-popping art. The new exhibit showcases a variety of examples of the paper engineered genre and offers visitors the opportunity to glimpse the process of some of their favorite illustrators.
Paper engineering, used in and synonymous with moveable or pop-up books, relates to origami and employs folded paper to illustrate a story, allowing for the designs to be “animated,” and come to life in front of the reader.
Alongside old favorites, such as Lothar Meggendorfer’s illustration from The Monkey Theatre (1893), can be found brand new acquisitions from Keith Allen and David Carter. The exhibit also includes an America-themed pop-up by Matthew Reinhart created for the Martha Stewart Show and a recently acquired selection of fairy tale pop-ups by Ohio-based illustrator Jeff Ebbeler.
Stop in to the Mazza Museum to experience this unique form of picture book making through a new display of art which comes in many different shapes, sizes and dimensions.
