There’s Music in the Air: Funday Sunday Welcomes Local Musical Talent

Families and guests of the Mazza Museum at the University of Findlay will be treated to a musical presentation by students from the Findlay High School Symphony Orchestra as well as students from Glenwood and Donnell middle schools during February’s Funday Sunday: “Magical Music.” The event will take place from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Feb. 5 and give guests the chance to be up close and personal with a variety of musical instruments.

Ken Pressel, the musical director for the Findlay High School Symphony Orchestra, will be at Mazza with several of his students and will offer introductions of the musicians and instruments. Students from the high school as well as a quintet of seventh graders will host an “instrument petting zoo” that will give guests a chance to touch and sample the musical instruments available. Some of the instruments that are going to be available for sampling are the violin, cello and bass. The event raises awareness of different types of music and instruments available.

Stations will be set up for decorating guitars and music notes and participants will get the chance to create their own music on a piano. The musical compositions will be recorded and children will be able to hear it played back for them. Other activity stations at the event will include art projects, face painting and a gaming station where participants can win prizes.

In addition to the activities and performances, the Funday Sunday event will feature several guests including Amanda Sprague, owner of Music Together in Findlay and Deb Wickerham, a retired science teacher from Findlay City Schools, who will have two stations set up to provide musical science activities involving tuning forks. Students from the Japanese outreach program will also have their own booth.

The Mazza Museum located on the campus of the University of Findlay is home to the world’s most diverse collection of original picture book art. The Museum and Gift Shop are open Wednesday through Friday from noon to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. Admission is free, and the Museum hosts a variety of events throughout the year for children and adults.
