Frequently Asked Questions
Q.
When should I call about an emergency?
Anytime that you are uncomfortable with a behavior that your horse is exhibiting or your horse has injured itself. There is specific injuries that should be addressed earlier rather than later. These include lacerations or punctures around any joints, large open lacerations or eye injuries. When horses are demonstrating signs of colic it is best to contact a veterinarian at the onset to increase the success of treating the colic. Many times horse owners wait to long to see if the horse will resolve the pain on their own before calling a veterinarian. We may not need to come out to see the horse when you call but can offer you suggestions and specific signs where we need to become involved.
Q
.
How long does it take to get a coggins?
We send coggins into the lab on Tuesday's and Thursday's which helps to keep the costs down for shipping. Normally, we receive results three days after they have been shipped. In cases where you need an expedited service we can overnight the sample(s) and the lab can process using a different method. This costs substantially more due to the extra costs in the shipping and lab work.
Q.
What Dental Care does my horse require and how often does he need it?
Horses erupt teeth throughout their entire life so due to the motion in which horses chew and the inconsistent growth patterns of the teeth, horses need to have their teeth checked once a year. We can perform the dental service at the farm or at our clinic. We utilize motorized floats along with hand tools to correct the teeth surfaces. When performing dental floats at the farm we require nearby electrical service and a handler for the horse.
