Working with Students with Physical Disabilities
Students use wheelchairs or other mobility aids as a result of a variety of disabilities including spinal cord injury, cerebral palsy, post‑polio, multiple sclerosis, severe arthritis, quadriplegic, amputation, muscular dystrophy, etc. The student with spinal bifida may have short stature and may use a wheelchair, braces, or crutches. A number of individuals with conditions such as cerebral palsy walk without assistance but may not be able to negotiate steps or other barriers. Other disabilities that can significantly affect students' general mobility include cardiac conditions, chronic back pain, active sickle cell anemia, diabetes, and respiratory disorders such as cystic fibrosis. Classroom modifications will depend on the student's functional limitations. Students with permanent and temporary physical disabilities are eligible to receive services through our office. Here are a few helpful hints:
Provide a syllabus with clearly delineated expectations and due dates.
Allow extended time for a scribe for assistance when taking an exam or completing projects.
Students will confirm test arrangements with you via an appointment card from The Office of Disability Services (ODS).
Note takers or tape recorders will be provided from ODS to record lecture information. Any written materials during class lectures should be placed with the student.
Classroom accessibility will be evaluated before the first class. Some students may be tardy due to architectural barriers. If the student is unable to attend due a malfunctioning elevator, you will be notified. Preferential seating may be necessary to meet student needs.
Use multiple formats, such as visual aids, three-dimensional models, charts/graphs or auditory examples when presenting information.
If your course requires field trip experience, please announce in advance for students to arrange transportation (contact ODS with concerns on this issue).
Allow the student to use the accommodations listed on the approved accommodation letter from the ODS.
