Toledo Symphony Orchestra Performance to Feature World-Class Pianist and Conductor

The Toledo Symphony Orchestra will perform at 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 20, in Winebrenner Theological Seminary as part of The University of Findlay’s Concert and Lecture Series. The performance, made possible in part by National Lime and Stone Co., will conclude the series for the academic year.
   
Stefan Sanderling will conduct the concert, which includes Piano Concerto No. 26 in D Major, “Coronation,” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Symphony No. 103 in E-flat Major, “Drumroll,” by Franz Joseph Haydn.
   
Sanderling is the principal conductor of the Toledo Symphony Orchestra, and he also is music director of both the Florida Orchestra and the Chautauqua Institution Summer Music Festival in New York. Celebrated for his interpretation of the music of Shostakovich, in Europe and around the world, Sanderling has conducted many legendary orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Philharmonia Orchestra of London and many more.

His highly successful appearances with the NHK Symphony of Tokyo continue on a regular basis, and he also appeared in Japan with the New Japan Philharmonic and the Osaka Philharmonic as well as the Super World Orchestra Tokyo.

Featured pianist for the evening will be Andrew Armstrong. He has performed solo piano recitals and with orchestras in Asia, Europe, Latin America and the United States. Last summer, Armstrong was a soloist at the Chautauqua Music Festival under the direction of Sanderling.

Before becoming a concert pianist, Armstrong received more than 25 national and international first prizes. He also was named Gilmore Young Artist and received the Jury Discretionary Award at the Van Cliburn Competition, where he was the youngest pianist entered.
