Students, Community to Put On 'The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas' at UF

The University of Findlay’s vocal music and theatre programs will put on “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas” at 8 p.m. Feb. 23-26 and at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 27, in the John and Hester Powell Grimm Theatre, located in the Frank J. Egner Center for the Performing Arts.  

Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students and senior citizens. The show features mature content and language and is recommended for adult audiences. Call the UF Box Office at 419-434-5335 or e-mail boxoffice@findlay.edu for tickets. Advanced purchase is recommended.

 The Best Little Whorehouse in TexaThe country-western musical, with book by Larry L. King and Peter Masterson and music and lyrics by Carol Hall, is based on the true story of a legendary Texas brothel known as the Chicken Ranch, which operated from the 1890s to 1973. In the musical, the operation is run by Miss Mona Stangley, played by UF assistant professor of theatre Heather Williams, and protected by good ol’ boy Sheriff Ed Earl Dodd, portrayed by Chris Tucci, assistant professor of theatre at Heidelberg University.   

The cast of more than 40 includes both University students and community members, and the production features well-known songs including “Hard Candy Christmas,” “Twenty Fans are Turning” and the “Aggie Song.”  

The show received seven Tony Award nominations in 1979, with its leads winning both Best Featured Actor and Best Featured Actress awards, and eight Drama Desk nominations in 1978, with Peter Masterson and Tommy Tune named Outstanding Directors of a Musical and Carol Hall honored for both Outstanding Lyrics and Outstanding Music.
