UF Dressage Takes Team Sportsmanship Award

The University of Findlay hosted the Intercollegiate Dressage Association (IDA) national championship this weekend, bringing home the Team Sportsmanship Award and placing 10th in team competition.

The University of New Hampshire took home top honors from the team competition on Saturday with 42 points, besting second-place Virginia Intermont and third-place Delaware Valley, which both received 32 points, a tie broken by average percent.

High point rider was Greg Schmid of Otterbein College with a score of 72.105 percent, and Teresa McDonald of Virginia Tech University was named coach of the year.

The competition was hosted for the first time at the James L. Child Jr. Equestrian Complex, located on Township Road 201, with twelve teams vying in team competition on Saturday and 48 individual riders competing on Sunday.

The event also included a dog agility demonstration by Golden Collar School for Dogs, a variety of other vendors and an equine art show.

The University’s dressage team earned grand champion in Region E competition to earn the right to compete for the national title.

The University of Findlay’s Dressage Program — the only program in the nation in which students can take a dressage emphasis all four years — operates out of the James L. Child Jr. Equestrian Complex, a 72-acre facility located on County Road 201 on the east side of Findlay that accommodates more than 130 horses and features two indoor arenas.

Since beginning team competition in 2004, UF’s Intercollegiate Dressage Association (IDA) Team has qualified for the IDA Nationals both as a team and with individuals. UF’s IDA team was first in the region in both 2008 and 2007 and second in the region in 2006 and 2005, and finished eighth in the nation in 2008, fourth in 2007 and 2006, and seventh in 2005.
