Avercamp, Dutch, 1585-1634, Winter Scene on a Canal, c. 1615, Toledo Museum of Art), you will learn to find the clues and decipher the signs, symbols, and other visual evidence to explore indepth the early 17th century in Holland. For example, you might be inclined to ask about the role of mathematics and physical science in the world of arts and letters, or the practice and theory of medicine, or the art of gaming or relationships, or the effects of seasonal change on the populace or the psychology of social behavior or any other topic that emerges as you explore the work. You all will focus on the same painting (identified above)....and you each will work independently to your answer your own research question related to Winter Scene on a Canal.
