International business major

Ugur Dundar Poyraz, an international business major, came to The University of Findlay from Kayseri, Turkey, at the age of 17. He says he chose the University for three reasons: the opportunity to improve his English-speaking skills, the “up-to-date” business program and the friendly campus atmosphere.                  

As Poyraz looks toward graduation in December, he is confident in his decision to attend the University.

“It was a good choice. I made a lot of friends from different parts of the world,” said Poyraz. “Also, the business program and IELP (Intensive English Language Program) helped me to learn … the needed information and apply it to real-life situations.”                  

During his time at UF, Poyraz was active in Rotaract Club. He says one of his best Rotaract experiences was participating in the organization’s Speed Leader event.

“Talking with business owners and leaders provided me with useful information, which will be helpful to me in my career,” said Poyraz.                  
According to Poyraz, he has gained experience and learned other information that will help him as a business professional upon graduation, including research techniques, communication and writing skills, fundamentals of group work and computer skills.                  

Erin Laverick, Ph.D., director of the IELP program, nominated Poyraz as a featured graduate. She says Poyraz is “a pleasure to have in class.”

“What impresses me most is his willingness to participate in campus events and work with domestic students,” said Laverick.                  

Poyraz’s best memories of his time in Findlay extend beyond classwork and on-campus activities. He says he most enjoyed “participating in American college life.”                  

“Hosting events that gathered American and international students so that they can meet and exchange cultures at my house … created a lot of fun memories that I will never forget,” said Poyraz.                  

For Poyraz, the most important aspect of studying abroad at The University of Findlay was the opportunity to learn how to understand different cultures.

“When I came to UF, I could not speak a word of English, but in a short time I could learn it,” said Poyraz. “IELP professors were one of the major keys (in) my successful journey to finish up my undergraduate degree. They provide you with the information that will be important during your undergraduate classes.”

Poyraz’s advice for prospective students, both domestic and international: Don’t be afraid to meet people and be involved.                  

“The UF campus is a friendly campus,” said Poyraz. “They (prospective students) shouldn’t be afraid to be around people and participate in University activities.”
